What to do depends on the circumstances around the death. If you are not certain what to do, please call reception so we can help (or 111 if we are closed).
If you expected your loved one to die (ie they had an end of life condition) let us know either by calling reception during the day, or 111 over the weekend or overnight. The GP will contact the 'Medical Examiner's Office' and request permission to issue the 'Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD)'. Once they've agreed this, the GP fills out the certificate and sends it to them. You will then receive a call from the Medical Examiners Office explaining that you can book an appointment to register the death with Essex County Council.

If the death was not expected, please call 999 to inform emergency services that this has happened. They will attend and arrange referral to the coroners service. This team liaise with yourselves and the GP to arrange the paperwork you need. They will contact you directly.
